People measure success with obviously in my field

많은 분들이 축구에 있어서 성공을 가늠하는 척도로

by trophies, by medals,

트로피, 메달

by the success that I have had over my career.

제가 커리어에서 이룬 업적 등을 보시는 것 같아요

Personally, I measure success on

그런데 전 개인적으로 성공을 가늠할 때

have I had a good time?

내가 좋은 시간을 보냈는지?

Have I had fun?

즐거웠는지?

Have I reached the goals that I wanted to reach when I was eight or nine years old?

내가 8-9살 때 이루고 싶었던 목표를 이뤘는지에 더 초점을 둡니다

I wanted to captain my country.

전 대표팀 주장이 되고 싶었어요

I wanted to represent my country in a World Cup.

잉글랜드를 대표해 월드컵에 나가고 싶었거든요

I wanted to win the FA Cup, you know,

FA 컵에서 우승도 하고 싶었죠

and luckily, I achieved all those dreams.

운이 좋게도 전 제 꿈을 모두 이뤘습니다

But when I sit with kids

제가 아이들과 앉아서

and they turn around and say you know, how can we be professional footballers,

그 친구들이 저에게 어떻게 하면 프로 축구 선수가 될 수 있는지 물어볼 때면

the one thing I always say to them is

항상 해주는 말이 있습니다

A, You have to enjoy yourself.

우선 즐겨야 한다는 거죠

You have to have fun playing football.

축구를 하는 게 즐거워야 합니다

If you want to be a professional footballer.

프로 축구 선수가 되고 싶다면

then you have to have fun.

당연히 축구가 재밌어야죠

But more importantly, you have to be dedicated.

그런데 이보다 더 중요한 건 바로 전념해야 한다는 겁니다

You have to make sacrifices.

어느 정도 희생을 감수해야 한다는 거죠

And I think ‘sacrifices’ was probably one of the most important things for me 

전 제가 희생했던 순간들이 성공에 있어 가장 중요한 요소 중 하나였다고 생각합니다

because you know, as a young kid living in London and friends,

왜냐하면 전 어렸을 때 런던에서 자랐는데 제 친구들은

you know, going out on a Friday night,

금요일 밤만 되면 나가 놀았거든요

but I made the sacrifice of staying in, watching match of the day on a Saturday evening

하지만 전 제 여가 시간을 희생해 토요일 밤에 축구 하이라이트를 봤어요

and I had a game on the Sundays,

그리고 당시에 전 일요일마다 시합이 있었기 때문에

so I was in bed early

잠자리에도 일찍 들었어요

and those kinds of things,

그래서 이러한 것들이..

you know, for young kids are important.

어린 친구들에겐 중요하다고 봅니다

For me, soccer is the number one sport around the world

저에겐 축구가 세계 최고의 스포츠입니다

apart from America.

미국을 제외하면 말이죠

Don’t get me wrong, the other sports,

오해하지는 마세요! 다른 스포츠들도..

American football, basketball, baseball,

미식축구, 농구, 야구

they’re all great sports and have great athletes in these sports.

모두 위대한 스포츠이고 훌륭한 선수들이 많이 있으니까요

But the number one game in the world is soccer.

그래도 세계 최고의 스포츠는 축구입니다

I mean, it’s just that people have asked me that over the years.

많은 분들이 늘 제게 물어보시는 게

how do I curl the ball? Or how do I bend the ball?

어떻게 공을 그렇게 휘어 차느냐는 거거든요

And it’s something that just happened.

그런데 사실 그냥 그렇게 휘어집니다

It’s not something that I thought,

이게 뭐 제가 속으로

OK, I want to bend the ball better than anyone else

다른 선수들 보다 더 공을 잘 휘어 차야지

so I’m going to kick the ball in this certain way.

이렇게 공을 차보자. 이런 생각을 가지고 차는 게 아니거든요

I just worked on my striking of the ball.

전 그저 공을 차는 연습만 했을 뿐입니다

I just practiced every day.

훈련을 매일 했을 뿐이죠

It’s something that I’ve done from a very young age.

굉장히 어린 나이였을 때부터 연습해 온 겁니다

Even after every training session,

공식 훈련이 다 끝난 뒤에도 연습했거든요

I’d take balls on my own and just go

그냥 개인적으로 공을 가지고 가서

and kick and try

차보고 시도해 봅니다

and find new ways of getting the ball in the net without anyone touching it.

그리고 공이 골 망을 흔들 때까지 그 누구도 공을 건들지 못하게끔 차는 방법을 찾는 거죠

I’ve been lucky enough to have done that over the years with the way I kick the ball,

그리고 지난 수년간 실제로 이렇게 연마해 온 저만의 킥이 먹혔다는 점에서 전 운이 굉장히 좋았던 거죠

and I know that it’s a unique style.

저도 제 킥이 나름 독특하다는 걸 알거든요

And I know it’s a unique style

그런데 그걸 깨달은 것도 단지

just because my back hurts a little bit

어느 순간부터 허리가 조금씩 아파서 알게 된 거예요

more than it did when I was 15 years old.

제가 15살 때 그렇게 찼을 때보다는 확실히 아프더라구요

But it’s something that I practice, of course.

그래서 아무튼 연습의 산물입니다

That’s one thing I tell kids.

아이들에게 항상 얘기해 주죠

Unless you practice,

연습 없이는

you’re never going to get better at something.

뭘 하든 절대로 나아질 수 없다고 말입니다

I’ve always been driven.

전 항상 의욕이 넘쳤죠

Even at a young age,

심지어 어린 나이에도 말이에요

all I ever wanted to do was become a footballer

전 그저 축구선수가 되고 싶었거든요

or soccer star.

아니면 축구 스타?

And that was my only ambition.

이게 제 유일한 포부였죠

I know it’s different these days with kids.

물론 저도 요즘 아이들은 다르다는 걸 압니다

There’s obviously this fame, this fortune.

명성도 원할 것이고 큰 돈을 버는 것도 있겠고

And it might be easy for me to say that because,

그리고 제가 이렇게 말을 하면 쉬운 것처럼 들릴 수도 있겠죠

obviously, I’ve done very well at the game,

전 축구를 잘 했으니까요

but I’d still be playing this game even if I wasn’t being paid for it.

그래도 전 제가 돈을 받지 못했었더라도 축구를 계속했을 거예요

Not that I don’t want to be paid for it,

그렇다고 제가 돈을 받기 싫다는 건 아닙니다

but I still would be playing this sport.

아무튼 그랬더라도 전 축구를 했을 거예요
