How did you get the expertise to be the Chief Technology Officer of a rocket ship company?

Um.. Well, I do have a physics background.

Well.. Like I said, I read a lot of books,

I was very sad to see that because those guys are... yeah.

You know, those guys are heroes of mine, so it’s really tough.

What I’m trying to do is

to make a significant difference in space flight,
우주 여행에 대한 시각을 완전히 바꾸어 놓아
and help make space flight accessible to almost anyone.

And I would hope for as much support in that direction as we can receive.

Becoming a multi-planet species and space-faring civilization.

This is not inevitable.
불가피하다는 말은 아닙니다
If you look at the progress in space,
그렇기에 우주분야 진척상황을 살펴보면
in 1969, you were able to send somebody to the moon.
1969년에 우리는 사람을 달에 보낼 수 있었습니다.

Then we had the Space Shuttle.
그리고 우주 왕복선이 있었죠
The Space Shuttle could only take people to low Earth orbit.
우주 왕복선은 사람을 오직 저궤도로만 데려갈 수 있었습니다
Then the Space Shuttle retired,
그러다가 우주 왕복선이 퇴역했고,
and the United States could take no one to orbit.
미국은 더 이상 사람을 궤도로 보낼 수 없게 되었습니다.
So that’s the trend.
이게 현재 추세입니다.
The trend is like down to nothing.
이제 아무 것도 남지 않았어요.
People are mistaken when they think that technology just automatically improves.
사람들은 기술이 자연스럽게 발전한다고 생각하는데 이는 대단한 착각이죠.
It does not automatically improve.
기술은 스스로 나아지지 않습니다.
It only improves if a lot of people work very hard to make it better,
많은 이들이 기술을 발전시키기 위해열심히 일해야만 진보하는 것이죠
and actually it will, I think, by itself degrade, actually.

The thing about rockets is that they’re all expendable.
모든 로켓은 사실 소모품입니다.
All rockets that fly today are fully expendable.
현재 사용되는 모든 로켓은 모두 소모품이죠.
The space shuttle was an attempt at a reusable rocket,
우주 왕복선이 로켓을 재사용 하고자 한 시도였다고 볼 수 있는데
but even the main tank of the space shuttle was thrown away every time,
이 마저도 우주선의 메인 연료 탱크는 매번 떨어져 나가야 했고
and the parts that were reusable
재사용이 가능한 부품들도
took a 10,000-person group nine month to refurbish for flight.
재사용하기 위해 만 명이 9개월동안 붙잡고 있어야 했죠.
So the space shuttle ended up costing a billion dollars per flight.
그래서 우주 왕복선도 한 번 비행할 때마다 10억달러가 들었습니다.
The goal of SpaceX is to try to advance rocket technology,
스페이스X의 목표는 로켓 기술을 진보시키는 것인데
and in particular to try to crack a problem that I think is vital for humanity to become a space-faring civilization,
특히 제가 생각하는, 인류에게 있어 굉장히 중요한 사안인 우주여행이 가능한 문명을 이루어야 한다는 문제를 해결하고자 하며
which is to have a rapidly and fully reusable rocket.
이를 위해서는 빠르고 완전하게 재사용이 가능한 로켓이 필요합니다.
It’s important that the rocket stages be able to come back,
이 때 중요한 것은 로켓이 되돌아올 수 있도록 하는 것입니다
to be able to return to the launch site
발사된 곳으로 말이죠
and be ready to launch again within a matter of hours.
그리고 몇 시간 안에 다시 발사될 수 있어야 합니다.
What a lot of people don’t realize is,
많은 분들이 잘 모르시는 게 있는데
the cost of the fuel, of the propellant, is very small.
로켓 추진체에 들어가는 연료의 비용은 얼마 들지 않는다는 겁니다.
It’s much like on a jet.
제트기와 비슷한 수준이거든요
So the cost of the propellant is about
다시 말해 추진체에 들어가는 비용은
.3 percent of the cost of the rocket.
로켓 전체 비용의 0.3% 정도입니다.
So it’s possible to achieve, let’s say, roughly 100-fold improvement in the cost of spaceflight
그러므로, 말하자면 우주여행 경비를 대략100배 절감할 수 있다는 얘기입니다.
if you can effectively reuse the rocket.
로켓만 효과적으로 재사용할 수 있다면 말이죠.
That’s why it’s so important.
그래서 이 문제가 매우 중요합니다.
Every mode of transport that we use,
우리가 사용하는 모든 운송 수단은
whether it’s planes, trains, automobiles, bikes, horses, is reusable,

but not rockets.

So we must solve this problem in order to become a space-faring civilization.

I just think there have to be reasons that you get up in the morning and you want to live.

And if we’re not out there,

and being a multi-planet species,

I find that it’s incredibly depressing if that’s not the future that we’re going to have.
