How do you describe yourself?

본인을 어떻게 소개하시나요?

I usually describe myself as an engineer.

저는 보통 엔지니어라고 저를 소개합니다

That’s basically what I’ve been doing since I was a kid.

그게 제가 어렸을 때부터 해오던 일이니까요

I’m interested in things that change the world or that affect the future

전 세상을 바꾸는 것들이나 미래에 영향을 미치는 것들에 관심이 많아요

and wondrous new technology

또 놀라운 신기술도요

where you see it and you’re like, Wow. How’d that even happen? How’s that possible?

보고 나면 이런 생각이 드는 기술 있잖아요, 우와 어떻게 된 거야? 이게 가능해?

I taught myself how to program computers when I was a kid

전 어렸을 때 프로그래밍을 독학했고

and bought my first computer when I was 10

열 살 때 처음으로 컴퓨터를 사서

and sold my first commercial program when I was 12.

열두 살 때 처음 상업용 프로그램을 만들어 팔았죠

When I was a kid I was wondering, what’s the meaning of life?

전 어렸을 때 인생의 의미가 무엇인지 궁금했어요

Like, why are we here?

우리는 왜 여기 있지?

What’s it all about?

이게 다 무슨 의미일까?

And I came to the conclusion that

그러다가 제가 내렸던 결론은

what really matters is trying to understand the right questions to ask.

올바른 의문을 품고 이를 이해하려는 노력이 가장 중요하다는 것이었죠

And the more that we can increase the scope and scale of human consciousness,

그렇게 우리가 인간의 의식 범위와 규모를 보다 더 확대해 나갈 수 있다면

the better we’re able to ask these questions.

제대로 된 의문을 던질 수 있을 테니까요

I think we’re at the dawn of a new era and I think it’s going to be very exciting.

저희는 이제 막 새로운 시대의 여명에 접어들었다고 보는데 아마도 굉장히 흥미로울 거예요

What we’re hoping to do with SpaceX is to push the envelope

저희가 스페이스X를 통해 기대하고 있는 것은 우리의 한계를 넘어서고

and provide a reason for people to be excited and inspired to be human.

많은 분들이 인간으로서 신이 나고 영감을 받을 수 있는 이유를 제시하는 것입니다

You just wanted to get people interested in space again?

그러니까 사람들이 우주에 다시 관심을 갖게 하고 싶으셨다는 건가요?

Capture the imagination?

상상력을 사로잡을 수 있도록 말이죠?

Yes. That was the idea.

네 바로 그거였어요

I think that being a multi-planetary species

전 우리가 다행성 종이 되고

and being out there among the stars

우주로 나아가 별들과 함께하는 것이

is important for the long-term survival of humanity.

장기적으로 봤을 때 인류의 생존에 있어 중요하다고 생각합니다

And, that’s one reason,

그게 하나의 이유예요

kind of.. like life insurance for life collectively. Life as we know it.

뭐랄까 일종의 생명보험이랄까.. 우리의 삶 전체로 봤을 때 말이에요

But then the part that I find personally most motivating is that

그런데 제가 개인적으로 가장 동기부여를 받는 부분은 바로

it creates a sense of adventure,

우주여행이 모험심을 불러일으킨다는 것과

and it makes people excited about the future.

사람들로 하여금 미래가 기대되도록 만들어 준다는 겁니다

If you consider two futures,

우리가 두 가지 미래를 고려해 봤을 때

one where we are forever confined to Earth until eventually something terrible happens

하나는 우리가 훗날 무언가 끔찍한 일이 일어날 때까지 영원히 지구에만 머물러 있어야 하는 미래가 있고

or another future where we are out there on many planets,

다른 하나는 우리가 여러 행성으로 나아가거나

maybe even going beyond the solar system,

어쩌면 우리 태양계 밖으로까지 나아가는 미래가 있다면

I think that second version is incredibly exciting and inspiring.

전 두 번째 버전이 훨씬 더 흥분되고 영감을 준다고 생각하거든요

And there need to be reasons to get up in the morning.

그리고 우리가 아침에 일어나고 싶게끔 만드는 이유가 있어야 하지 않을까요

You know, life can’t just be about solving problems.

인생이 단지 문제를 해결하는 것만으로 될 일은 아니잖아요

Otherwise, what’s the point?

그게 아니라면 무슨 의미가 있나요?

There’s got to be things that people find inspiring and make life worth living.

우리에게 영감을 주고 우리의 삶이 살만한 가치가 있도록 느껴지게 하는 것이 있어야죠

Why even began?

뭐 하러 시작하셨어요?

When something is important enough

어떤 일이 충분히 중요하다면

you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.

이익이 되지 않더라도 해야죠

How much of your personal fortune have you poured into this?

우주 사업에 개인 재산을 얼마나 쏟아부으신 거죠?

100 million dollars.

1억 달러 투자했습니다

100 million dollars into something that you did not believe would work at the beginning?

1억 달러나 되는 돈을 초창기에 본인마저도 잘 될 거라는 믿음이 없던 일에 쏟아부으신 거예요?

How did you figure you were gonna starta car company and be successful at it?

일론씨는 어떻게 자동차 회사를 창업해서 성공할 수 있을 거라고 내다보신 건가요?

Well I didn’t really think Tesla will be successful.

그게.. 사실 저는 테슬라가 성공할 거라고 보지 않았어요

I thought we would most likely fail.

거의 실패할 거라고 봤거든요

But I thought that we at least could address the false perception that people had

하지만 적어도 우리가 사람들이 가지고 있는 잘못된 인식은 바로잡을 수 있겠다고 생각했죠

that an electric car had to be ugly and slow and boring like a golf cart.

전기차는 못생기고 느리고 골프 카트처럼 지루하다는 인식 말이에요

But you say you didn’t expect the company be successful,

그런데 일론씨도 테슬라가 성공할 거라고는 기대하지 않으셨다고 하셨는데

then why try?

왜 시도하신 거죠?

If something is important enough

만약에 어떤 일이 충분히 중요하다면

you should try even if the probable outcome is failure.

예상되는 결과가 실패일지라도 시도해야죠

Why does Tesla exist?

테슬라는 왜 존재할까요?

Why are we making electric cars?

저희는 왜 전기차를 만들까요?

Why does it matter?

이게 왜 중요할까요?

That’s because it’s very important to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport.

그건 바로 지속 가능한 운송으로의 전환을 가속화하는 것이 굉장히 중요하기 때문입니다

This is really important for the future of the world.

이건 우리의 미래에 있어 굉장히 중요한 사안입니다

We have record high CO2 levels.

이산화탄소의 농도가 최고치를 기록했습니다

We recently passed over 403 PPM of CO2 in the atmosphere

최근 들어 지구 대기 속 이산화탄소의 농도가 403 ppm을 넘었는데요

and what that CO2 increase results in is a steadily increasing temperature.

이처럼 이산화탄소가 증가하게 되면 이는 점진적인 기온 상승으로 이어집니다

So we’ve already increased by two degrees

벌써 화씨 2도 가까이 증가했습니다만

In fact, that doesn’t tell the whole story

이게 전부가 아닙니다

because the extremes of temperature increased by as much as 20 degrees

왜냐하면 기온의 급격한 차이의 폭은 거의 20도까지 상승했으며

and that line is going to keep going for some time in the future.

그래프에 보이는 선은 미래에 계속해서 상승할 것이기 때문이죠

It’s really important.

그렇기에 이는 굉장히 중요합니다

It makes a difference if we accelerate the transition to sustainable transport.

우리가 지속 가능한 운송으로의 전환을 가속화한다면 큰 변화를 가져올 수 있습니다

And beyond global warming,

그리고 지구 온난화는 차치하더라도

there’s just the fact that the combustion cars emit toxic gases

내연 자동차들이 유독성 가스를 방출한다는 사실도 문제가 됩니다

and according to an MIT study,

MIT의 한 연구 결과에 따르면

there are 53,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone from auto emissions.

미국 내에서만 자동차 배기가스로 인한 사망자가 매년 53,000명이나 된다고 합니다

So, it stands to reason that if a vehicle is spewing  toxic gas that’s obviously bad for your health.

운송 수단이 유독성 가스를 내뿜는다면 우리의 건강에 해롭다는 건 명백한 사실이잖아요

I think I feel fear quite strongly

전 사실 두려움을 굉장히 많이 느낍니다

but I.. if what we’re doing isn’t

그런데 전.. 저희가 하는 일이..

if one of doing is I think important enough

저희가 하는 일이 충분히 중요하다고 생각된다면

then I just override the fear.

그냥 두려움을 무시해 버리는 거죠

So, but it’s not as though I don’t fear,

저라고 두려움을 느끼지 않는 게 아니거든요

I feel fear like more strongly than I would like.

전 제가 생각하는 것보다 더 큰 두려움을 느낍니다

It’s normal to feel fear.

두려움을 느끼는 건 정상입니다

Like, you’d have to..

예를 들어 여러분이..

definitely something mentally wrong if you didn’t feel fear

두려움을 못 느끼신다면 오히려 그게 정신적으로 문제가 있는 게 아닐까요

Starting SpaceX,

스페이스X를 창업할 때

I thought the odds of success were less than 10 percent

전 성공할 확률을 10프로 미만이라고 봤거든요

and I just accepted that actually.. probably I would just lose everything

아마도 제가 가진 모든 걸 잃을 수도 있겠다는 사실을 그냥 받아들였죠

but that maybe would make some progress.

하지만 이를 통해 어느 정도 진전을 이를 수 있다면,

if we could just move the ball forward

그래서 우리가 공을 앞으로 넘길 수만 있다면

even if we die maybe some other company could pick up the baton

우리는 죽더라도 다른 회사에서 우리로부터 바통을 이어받아

and keep moving it forward,

계속해서 나아갈 수 있을 거라고 생각했어요

so that we still do some good. Yeah.

그렇게라도 뭔가 좋은 일을 하면 됐다고 봤죠

Same with Tesla.

테슬라도 마찬가지구요

I thought your odds of a car company succeeding were extremely low.

전 테슬라의 성공 가능성도 극히 낮다고 봤거든요

At Tesla, we don’t make slow cars.

테슬라에서는 느린 차는 만들지 않습니다

When you had that third failure in a row,

세 번 연속으로 로켓 발사에 실패하셨을 때

Did you think, I need to pack this in?

‘이제 그만둬야겠다’는 생각을 하시지는 않으셨나요?

Never.

한 번도 없습니다

Why not?

어째서요?

I don’t ever give up.

저는 절대 포기하지 않으니까요

I mean.. I’d have to be dead or completely incapacitated.

뭐.. 제가 죽거나 병으로 완전히 무기력해지지 않는 한 말이죠

This is a tricky business?

이거 정말 힘든 사업이죠?

Tricky.

Yeah..

I wish it wasn’t so hard.

이 정도로 힘들지는 않았으면 했는데..

In 2008, the rocket company is not going well.

2008년도에 로켓 회사는 잘 안되고 있었고

No.

안 됐죠

You had three failures.

세 번 실패하셨잖아요

Great.

대단했죠

The car company is hemorrhaging money.

자동차 회사는 돈 출혈이 심각했구요

Yeah.

And the American economy has tanked in the worst recession since the Great Depression.

게다가 미국 경제는 대공황 이래 최악의 불황을 맞았죠

Right.

그랬죠

What was that year like for you?

그 해에 심정이 어떠셨어요?

And I’m getting divorced by the way. Add to that.

거기다 전 이혼 소송까지 진행 중이었어요

That was definitely the worst year of my life.

그때가 분명 제 인생 최악의 해였죠

When we called people and say,

저희가 사람들에게 전화를 걸어

Hey would you like to invest?

우리한테 투자 좀 하실래요?라고 물으면

They’d be angry that we just called.

저희가 전화를 했다는 사실만으로 화를 내시더라구요

It’s like.. It’s not only no.. and you know, various expletives.

그러니까 그냥 거절하는 수준이 아니라.. 온갖 욕설을 퍼부으셨죠

I remember waking up the Sunday before Christmas in 2008

2008년에 크리스마스를 맞기 전 일요일에 일어났을 때가 기억이 나는데

and thinking to myself,

속으로 이런 생각을 했어요

Man I never thought I was someone who could ever be capable of a nervous breakdown, and,

이야.. 난 내가 신경쇠약에 걸리리라고는 생각해 본 적이 없는데..

but I felt this was the closest I’ve ever come.

그런데 그때가 제가 느끼기로는 거의 신경쇠약이었어요

Cause it seemed pretty, pretty dark.

왜냐하면 그때는 미래가 정말 암울해 보였거든요

NASA called and told us that we’d won 1.5 billion dollar contract

나사에서 연락이 와서 저희가 15억 달러 계약을 따냈다고 얘기해주는데

and I couldn’t even hold the phone

그때 저는 전화기를 들고 있지도 못하겠더라구요

I was like.. I just looked.. I just blurted out, I love you guys!

그러고는 그냥 사랑해요! 라고 무심결에 내뱉었죠

They saved you?

나사가 살렸네요?

Yeah they did.

네 그랬죠

Financially and maybe even emotionally?

재정적으로도 그렇고 어쩌면 감정적으로도 도움이 됐겠어요?

I’ll tell you.. that was.. definitely helpful. Yeah.

Two days later, on Christmas eve,
