There’s no miracle people.

It just happens they got interested in this thing,
다들 그저 어쩌다가 과학에 흥미가 생겨서
and they learned all this stuff.
이런 것들을 배운 것일 뿐이니까요
They’re just people.
모두 평범한 사람들입니다
There’s no talent or
특별한 재능을 요한다거나
special miracle ability to understand quantum mechanics
양자역학을 이해하기 위한 기적의 능력 따윈 존재하지 않습니다
or miracle ability to imagine electromagnetic fields
전자기장을 상상해내는 기적의 능력 같은 것도 마찬가지이구요
that comes without practice and reading and learning and study.
이런 능력은 연습과 독서, 학습과 공부 없이는 나타나지 않습니다
So if you say you take an ordinary person
그렇기 때문에 평범한 사람일지라도
who’s willing to devote a great deal of time and study
굉장히 많은 시간을 할애하여 공부하고
and work and thinking and mathematics and so on,
노력하고 생각하고 수학을 익히고 한다면
then he’s become a scientist.
그렇게 과학자가 되는 겁니다

I don’t think about legacy much.
저는 유산을 남긴다는 것에 연연하지 않습니다
I just think about being able to get up every day
그보다는 매일같이 일어나서
and go in
사무실로 가
and hang around with these great people
훌륭한 분들과 함께 어울리면서
and hopefully create something that other people would love as much as we do.

My entire life has been spent only in one industry
저는 평생을 오직 한 산업에만 종사하였습니다
which is this one.
바로 이 산업군이죠
And I’ve seen a lot of people make a lot of things,
그러면서 많은 사람들이 다양한 제품들을 만드는 걸 봐왔고
I’ve seen a lot of people fail at a lot of things
많은 사람들이 실패하는 것도 봐왔습니다
and my point of view on this is

that the doers are the major thinkers.
실행하는 사람들이 바로 중요한 생각을 해내는 사람들이라는 거죠
The people that really create the things that change this industry
이 산업을 송두리째 바꿔버리는 제품을 창조하는 사람들은
are both the thinker-doer in one person.
생각하는 동시에 행동하는 사람입니다
We humans are tool builders
우리 인간은 도구를 만드는 존재이며
and that we can fashion tools
우리는 이러한 도구를 만들어
that amplify these inherent abilities that we have to spectacular magnitudes
우리 안에 내재된 능력을 끌어내 최대치로 증폭시킬 수 있습니다
I started when I was 17.
저는 17살 때 일을 시작했어요
I was kind of maniacal.
그때는 정말 미친 듯이 일했죠
I wasn’t married, no kids,
결혼도 안 했으니 자식도 없었고
I didn’t believe in weekends,
주말도 없이 일했거든요
until I was about 30,
서른 살이 될 때까지
I didn’t believe in vacations at all.
휴가도 한 번 안 갔으니까요
So it was incredibly fulfilling to write the code and be hands on,
당시에 제가 코드를 짜면서 직접 일을 해 나감으로써 굉장한 성취감을 느꼈거든요
you know stay up all night
밤을 꼬박 새우면서 했으니까요
You always know you can be doing better
그리고 이전보다 더 잘 할 수 있다는 걸 알기에
that you should learn more that..
더 많이 공부하고
building the team
팀을 꾸리고
and thinking about things in a better way
더 나은 방법이 없을까 생각하다 보면
so you see the positive results
긍정적인 결과들이 나타나는데
but you always want to do even better.
그래도 항상 그보다 더 잘 하고 싶다는 생각이 들었죠
How did you get the expertise to be the Chief Technology Officer of a rocket ship company?

Um.. Well, I do have a physics background,
음... 그게.. 저는 물리학을 전공했어요
that’s helpful as a foundation,
그게 회사 설립에 도움이 됐던 것 같아요
and then I read a lot of books
그런 다음 책을 엄청 많이 읽었고
and talked to a lot of smart people.

Yeah.

Well self-taught, yes, meaning,
그러니까 독학했다는 게
I don’t have an aerospace degree.
저에게 항공우주공학 학위가 없다는 걸 의미합니다
So how did you go about acquiring the knowledge?
그러니까 어떻게 그 지식을 습득하셨다는 건가요?
Well.. Like I said, I read a lot of books,
말씀드렸다시피 저는 책을 엄청 많이 읽었고
talked to a lot of people,
사람들과 많은 대화를 나누고
and had a great team.
훌륭한 팀이 있었기에 가능했죠
So what is super hard mean?
엄청 열심히 한다는 건 뭘 뜻할까요?
When my brother and I were starting our first company,
저 같은 경우 제 동생과 첫 사업을 시작할 때
we were so hard up that we had just one computer.
저희는 돈에 쪼들려서 컴퓨터가 한 대 밖에 없었거든요
so the website was up during the day,
그래서 낮 시간 동안에는 웹사이트를 운영하면서
and I was coding at night.
밤이 되면 코드를 짰습니다
Seven days a week, all the time.
주 7일 매 순간 말입니다
Work hard like..
열심히 한다는 건..
I mean, every waking hour.
깨어 있는 시간 내내 하는 거죠
Work like hell.
미친 듯이 일해야죠
I mean you just have to put in..
그러니까 그냥.. 뭐
you know, 80 hour,
80시간..
80 to 100 hour weeks every week.
매주 80에서 100시간 일하는 거죠
