자신의 꿈을 좇지 않고
and are locked into their careers?
현재의 직업에 발이 묶인 분들께 한 말씀해 주신다면요?
Because they are too afraid to take risks and pursue something meaningful.
위험을 감수하고 뭔가 의미 있는 일을 하는 것이 너무 두려운 나머지 꿈을 포기한 분들께 말입니다
Well, the first thing I would say is,
우선, 제가 가장 먼저 드리고 싶은 말씀은
well, you should be afraid of taking risks and pursuing something meaningful,
위험을 감수하고 무언가 의미 있는 일을 하고자 하신다면 두려움을 느끼시는 게 당연하시겠지만
but you should be more afraid of staying where you are if it’s making you miserable.
자신을 비참하게 만드는 현실에 그저 안주하고 계신다면 이는 더 큰 두려움으로 다가올 거라는 겁니다
The clock is ticking
시간은 계속 흐릅니다
and if you’re miserable in your job now
현재의 직장 생활에서 비참함을 느끼고 계시면서도
and you change nothing
아무것도 바꾸지 않으신다면
in five years,
5년 뒤에는
you’ll be much more miserable
지금보다 더 비참해지실 것이고
and you’ll be a lot older.
나이는 더 들어있겠죠
But isn’t it a luxury to pursue what is meaningful?
그래도 의미 있는 일을 추구하는 건 사치 아닌가요?
Our viewers have mortgages.
이걸 보고 계신 분들 중에는 대출도 받으시고
They have children,
자녀도 있으시고
they have payments and loans.
납부해야 할 공과금들도 있으실 텐데
It’s a luxury to pursue because we lack the resources.
이렇게 사정이 넉넉지 않은 상황에서 그렇게 하는 건 사치잖아요
Well, I don’t think I don’t remember now.
글쎄요 전 그렇게 생각하진 않는 게,
I’m not talking about what makes you happy.
전 지금 행복하게 해주는 것에 대한 얘기를 하는 게 아닙니다
It’s a luxury to pursue what makes you happy.
우리를 행복하게 해주는 걸 좇는 건 사치일 수도 있겠죠
It’s a moral obligation to pursue what you find meaningful.
자신에게 의미 있다고 여겨지는 것을 해 나가는 건 마땅히 해야 할 일입니다
And that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
그렇다고 이게 결코 쉽다는 건 아닙니다
It might require sacrifice.
희생이 수반될 수도 있을 테니까요
If you need to change your job to
여러분께서 직업을 바꾸시려고 하는데
let’s say you have a family,
예를 들어 가족이 있으시다거나
and children, and a mortgage
자녀가 있고, 대출금도 갚아야 하는 등
you have responsibilities,
책임지셔야 할 것들이 있으시다면
you’ve already picked up those responsibilities.
여러분은 이미 이런 것들에 책임 지실 의무를 지니신 겁니다
You don’t just get to walk away scot-free and say, “Well I don’t like my job. I quit.”
이런 상황에서 책임을 회피하려고“나 회사 가기 싫어. 때려칠래” 하고 도망칠 수는 없는 거잖아요
That’s no strategy.
그건 전략이 아닙니다
But what you might have to do is you think,
그보다는 이렇게 생각해 보셔야겠죠,
“Well this job is killing my soul. All right.
“지금 다니는 회사 때문에 내 영혼이 죽어가는 것 같아.
So, what do I have to do about that?
이런 상황에서 어떻게 해야 할까?
Well, I have to look for another job.
다른 일을 알아봐야겠어
Well, no one wants to hire me.”
그런데 날 뽑아 가려는 곳이 없네.”
It’s like, okay, maybe you need to educate yourself more.
그렇다면 아마도 공부를 더 해야 하실 수도 있겠고
Maybe you need to update your curriculum vitae your resume.
아니면 이력서를 업데이트해야 하실 수도 있을 것이고
Maybe you need to overcome your fear of being interviewed.
또는 면접에 대한 두려움을 극복하는 게 필요할 수도 있겠죠
Maybe you need to sharpen your social skills.
아니면 사교성을 갈고 닦으셔야 할 수도 있겠구요
Like you have to think about these things strategically.
이런 것들을 보다 더 전략적으로 생각해 보셔야 합니다
If you’re going to switch careers,
직업을 바꾸고자 하신다면
you have to do it like an intelligent responsible person.
현명하고 책임감 있는 사람처럼 행동하셔야죠
That might take you a couple of years of effort to do properly.
이를 제대로 해 내기 위해서는 꽤 긴 시간의 노력이 들어갈 수도 있습니다
You need a goal,
목표는 필요합니다만
but we don’t want to let your distance from the goal crush you.
목표에 도달하기까지의 거리가 너무 멀어 여러분을 주저앉게 해서는 안 되겠죠
So, you got to set up a goal
그러니 목표를 세우시되
and then you got to make the goal, break the goal down into parts
그 목표를 세부적으로 쪼개시는 겁니다
so that you can move towards it
그래야만 앞으로 나아가실 수 있으실 테고
you have a fairly high likelihood of doing it.
목표를 실천할 공산이 커질 테니까요
Set a high aim,
목표는 높게 잡으시되
but differentiate it down
이를 세부적으로 쪼개세요
so you know what the next step is.
다음 단계에서 무엇을 해야 할지 알 수 있도록 말입니다
And then make the next step difficult enough
그리고 나서는 목표를 전 단계보다는 어렵게 잡으셔서
so you have to push yourself pass where you are
지금의 내 위치를 뛰어넘고자 자신을 몰아붙여 보세요
but also provide yourself with a reasonable probability of success.
하지만 동시에 여러분이 보시기에 성공의 가능성이 보이는 선에서 목표를 잡으시는 겁니다
One of the things I’ve noticed that around 30,
제가 알게 된 게 있는데, 서른 살 전후가 되면
you really have to stop comparing yourself in some ways to other people.
여러분 스스로를 남들과 비교하는 행동을 멈추셔야 한다는 겁니다
And the reason for that is that
그 이유는 바로
the particularities of your life are so idiosyncratic
여러분 개개인의 삶은 너무나 독특하기에
that there isn’t anyone really all that much like you,
여러분과 똑같은 삶을 산 사람은 없기 때문입니다
you know, because the details of your life happen to matter
여러분 삶의 세부적인 것들도 중요하니까요
and so maybe you compare yourself to some rock star or something like that
여러분이 록스타나 뭐 그런 부류의 인물들과 여러분 자신을 비교한다고 해봅시다
and you know, the person’s rich and famous and glamorous and all that
부자이고 유명하고 매력 넘치는 사람들과 말입니다
but you know they’re alcoholic
그런데 이들은 알코올 중독에다가
and they use too much cocaine
마약은 또 엄청나게 해대고
and they’ve had three divorces and it’s like..
이혼 경력이 세 번씩이나 있다면..
how the hell do you make sense out of that?
이걸 도대체 어떻게 받아들이시겠냐고요? 이게 과연 납득이 가시겠냐는 말입니다
Is that someone that you should judge yourself harshly against or not?
이런 사람들이 과연 여러분 스스로를 엄중하게 비교할 대상으로 적합할까요?
The answer is you don’t know
정답은 ‘여러분도 알 수 없다’ 입니다
because you don’t know all the details of their lives.
왜냐하면 우리가 이들 삶의 속내까지 알 수는 없으니까요
Who do you know that you can compare yourself to?
그럼 여러분 자신과 비교해도 될 만큼 여러분이 잘 아는 대상은 누구일까요?
That’s easy.
그건 쉽습니다

바로 여러분!
Yesterday!
어제의 나!
Aim high but use as your control yourself.
목표는 높게 잡되 이를 여러분 자신을 통제할 수단으로 활용하세요
It’s like so your goal is
그러니까 여러분의 목표는
to make today some tiny increment better than yesterday
어제보다 아주 조금이라도 나은 오늘을 만드시는 겁니다
and you can use better, you can define better yourself.
이때 ‘더 낫다’라는 건 여러분이 스스로 정의하시면 되구요
This doesn’t have to be some imposition of external morality.
이게 뭐 옳고 그름을 따지고 할 그런 건 아니니까요
You know where you’re weak and insufficient,
여러분 스스로의 약점과 부족한 부분을 알고 계시잖아요
where you could improve.
보완해야 할 부분도 아시구요
Think ok, Well, this is what I’m like yesterday.
이렇게 생각해 보세요, 어제의 난 이랬었지..
If I did little thing, things would be just an increment better.
내가 만약 아주 사소한 일이라도 했더라면 지금 조금이나마 상황이 나았겠지
All you have to do is to be a little bit better than my miserable self yesterday
어제의 비참했던 내 모습보다 아주 조금이나마 더 나은 모습만 보여주시면 됩니다
and that will propel you forward very rapidly
그러면 여러분은 아주 빠르게 전진하실 수 있으실 테고
and you can succeed at it,
성공하실 테니까요

이 얼마나 아름답습니까
because why not set yourself up for success?
