and I live in New York.

뉴욕에 거주 중이죠

What I love about New York is no two days are alike.

제가 뉴욕을 사랑하는 이유는 하루도 심심할 날이 없기 때문이죠

I generally wake up really early in the morning

저는 보통 아침 일찍 일어나는데

and I have a little bit of a routine that involves

아침마다 제가 따르는 일종의 루틴이 있습니다:

Iced coffee,

아이스 커피를 마시고,

the computer,

컴퓨터 업무를 본 뒤,

reading the newspaper.

After that,

그리고 나서

‘the getting ready part’ is the fastest part of my day.

나갈 준비를 하는데, 사실 이건 금방 끝납니다

I jump in the shower.

우선은 샤워를 합니다.

When I’m in the shower I decide what I’m gonna wear

그리고 이때 무엇을 입을지 결정하는데

and it’s always based on one thing,

여기서 고려하는 것이 딱 하나 있죠.

the weather.

바로 날씨입니다.

So New York for me is my favorite city in the world.

뉴욕은 제가 세계에서 가장 좋아하는 도시인데

And what I love about it is that it’s so diverse.

그 이유는 바로 뉴욕이 굉장히 다채로운 곳이기 때문이죠

There’s energy,

활기 넘치고

there’s excitement,

흥분되며

there’s action

항상 분주하거든요

but there’s also calm and quiet.

하지만 동시에 고요하면서 조용하기도 하죠

You just have to know where to find it.

다만 그런 곳을 찾는 게 쉽지는 않지만 말이죠

I was born in Salina, Kansas.

저는 캔자스 주 설라이나에서 태어났어요

which is right in the center of the country.

미국의 한복판에 위치해 있죠

I grew up with two younger brothers. I’m the oldest.

저는 두 명의 남동생이 있어요. 제가 장남입니다.

And I knew from a really early age

저는 어렸을 때부터 제가

that I was very different from the rest of my family.

저희 가족들과는 상당히 다르다고 느꼈어요.

Growing up, I have to say, I didn’t really have any idols.

저는 자라면서 누구를 우상으로 생각했던 적은 없어요.

I mean,

그러니까

I’m not one of those people that sort of pattern my life after anyone.

저는 제 자신을 다른 사람의 인생에 맞추는 그런 타입은 아니거든요

I think that I’ve been very independent in that way.

그런 면에서는 제가 굉장히 독립심이 강했던 것 같네요

I was probably influenced by, you know, movies about New York.

그보다는 뉴욕과 관련된 영화들로부터 영향을 많이 받은 것 같아요

I moved to New York in January of 1983.

저는 1983년 1월에 뉴욕으로 이사를 갔어요

I always say that the unfortunate thing about New York today is that

오늘날 뉴욕의 불행한 점을 저는 항상 얘기하는데 그건 바로

It’s really difficult to be young and poor.

더이상 젊고 가난한 사람들이 지내기 힘든 곳이 되었다는 겁니다

But in 1983, it was really easy.

1983년도만 해도 충분히 가능했거든요.

It was a really amazing time to sort of grow up

그 당시에는 젊고 가난한 사람들이 성장하기에 좋았던 시기였죠

which is what I feel like I did when I moved here as I became an adult.

제가 뉴욕으로 옮겼을 당시만 해도 그랬거든요. 저도 그때 어른이 된 것 같아요

Fashion always changes.

패션은 항상 바뀝니다

I mean that’s the nature of fashion and style

그게 패션과 스타일의 본성인 것 같아요.

but in menswear, and especially for myself,

남성패션의 경우, 특히 저에게 있어서는

I really think of, everything involving style as being an evolution, not really a revolution.

스타일과 관련된 모든 것은 ‘혁신적인 것’이라기 보다는 ‘진화하는 것’에 가깝다고 생각 하거든요

and even when something revolutionary might come along,

그래서 아무리 혁신적인 스타일이 부상을 하더라도

for me, it’s about how to integrate things in the past with things that you want to add in the future.

저는 그저 과거의 스타일에서 맘에 드는 부분을 미래의 스타일에 어떻게 녹여낼까만 생각합니다

Every man should have a navy-blue suit,

모든 남성분들이 네이비 블루 수트와

a navy jacket,

네이비 자켓

a grey suit,

그레이 수트

white shirts,

화이트 셔츠

blue shirts,

블루 셔츠

a narrow grey or blue tie to wear with either the grey or blue jacket.

그레이 또는 블루 자켓에 어울릴 얇은 계열의 그레이 또는 블루 넥타이는 가지고 계셔야 한다고 봐요

a perfect pair of black wingtips

완벽한 블랙 윙팁과

a perfect pair of brown wingtips

브라운 윙팁도 마찬가지고요.

I always say if you had that one belt,

제가 항상 말씀드리지만 벨트를 딱 하나만 소유하신다면

it should be an alligator belt with a silver buckle.

악어 가죽으로 된 실버 버클 벨트를 소유하셨으면 합니다.

Regardless of what you have,

어떤 옷을 가지고 계시든 간에

the first rule of thumb is

제 경험에 비춰봤을 때 명심하셔야 할 건

and I think the only thing that’s critical to success is

사실 저는 옷을 입을 때 가장 중요하다고 보는 게 바로,

clothes have to fit really well.

옷은 몸에 잘 맞게 입어야 한다는 겁니다

and that includes T-shirts and jeans.

이는 티셔츠와 청바지에도 적용됩니다

You know, if you need to take your jeans to the tailor

만약에 청바지를 수선 맡기신다면,

or a t-shirt to have it sort of broaden it a little bit like around the arm,

또는 티셔츠 같은 경우, 가령 팔 통을 조금 넓히신다고 하신다면

that’s what makes inexpensive things look expensive.

그게 바로 저렴한 옷도 비싸 보이게 만들어 주는 방법입니다

And if you don’t do that,

옷을 수선하지 않으시면

it’ll make something very expensive look really cheap.

아무리 고가의 옷도 싸구려 옷처럼 보이게 되거든요

A fashion icon?

제가 패션 아이콘이라고요?

I don’t think so.
